Vol. 398 No. 4

Written Answers. - Road Traffic Signs.

Charles Flanagan

Ceist:

131 Mr. Flanagan asked the Minister for the Environment if he will direct local authorities to undertake an examination of direction sign posts in each local authority area to ensure that such sign posts point accurately to their respective destination; and the steps he is taking to deal with the problem of such sign posts being tampered with.

It is the responsibility of local authorities to provide and maintain all traffic signs, including directional signs, in their functional areas.

My Department advises the authorities annually that they should ensure that traffic signs are provided in accordance with an updated specification issued by the Department in 1986 and that existing signs should be maintained adequately. That specification includes provision for a device which is designed to inhibit the rotation of the sign.

It is an offence to tamper with a traffic sign. It is for the Garda to enforce the law in this regard.
