Vol. 398 No. 5

Written Answers. - Border Crossing Delays.

Andrew Boylan

Ceist:

23 Mr. Boylan asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if his attention has been drawn to the delays being experienced by persons who use the Border crossing point manned by the British Army at Swanlinbar, County Cavan; to the fact that the situation has deteriorated considerably for no apparent reason during the past three weeks; the steps, if any, he is taking to improve or rectify the situation; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I assume that the Deputy is referring to the British Army checkpoint at Mullan Bridge, County Fermanagh. I am aware of the recent complaints to which the Deputy refers, and I can readily understand the frustration which has given rise to them. The matter has already been raised with the British authorities through the Anglo-Irish Secretariat in Belfast and is being actively pursued with them. In our contacts with the British authorities we have stressed the need to have the situation reviewed immediately so that people using the Swanlinbar-Enniskillen road can do so with the minimum of inconvenience.
