Vol. 398 No. 5

Written Answers. - Irish Emigrants.

Bernard Allen

Ceist:

38 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he has any estimate of the number of emigrants who went to the United States last year; if his attention has been drawn to the fact that many of these people are living in very unsatisfactory conditions; and if he has taken the matter up with the United States authorities.

The Central Statistics Office does not compile statistics on the number of Irish who emigrate to specific destinations and consequently details are not available of the numbers who have emigrated to the United States. US statistics for the year ending 30 September 1989 show that 10,185 US immigrant visas were issued to Irish citizens in the period. This latter figure does not include those Irish who may have emigrated illegally to the US last year and are therefore not featured in official US data.

The Government have attached a very high priority to efforts to improve the situation of our emigrants in the US. To help alleviate the welfare problems encountered by some of those emigrants, we established the immigration working committees.
