Vol. 398 No. 6

Written Answers. - Child Sexual Abuse.

Bernard Allen

Ceist:

66 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health if he will carry out a study on sexual abuse cases in each of the health board regions; and if he has any plans to review the question of treatment facilities for the perpetrators of sexual abuse.

My Department have commissioned a major research project involving an analysis of all alleged cases of child sexual abuse known to the community care teams in the Eastern Health Board area during 1988.

The research project has not yet been completed and the need for further research in this area will be considered when the full report becomes available.

A treatment service for perpetrators is currently provided by the Eastern Health Board's forensic psychiatric service. Persons from outside the Eastern Health Board area can also avail of this service. The operation of this service, is being kept under review by my Department in conjunction with the Eastern Health Board.
