114 Mr. Flanagan asked the Minister for Social Welfare when an increase in old age pension will be awarded to persons (details supplied) in County Laois.

The persons concerned are currently in receipt of old age non-contributory pension at the weekly rate of £40 each.

Following representations from the Deputy a social welfare officer was requested to reinvestigate the means of the couple concerned. On completion of the necessary inquiries their entitlement to an increase in pension will be reviewed and they will be advised of any revised decision given in their case.

John Bruton

Ceist:

116 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Social Welfare when an application for a contributory old age pension in respect of a person (details supplied) in County Meath will be approved and paid.

The person concerned, who has been in receipt of an EC pro rata retirement pension of £16.60 per week, has now been awarded an EC pro rata contributory old age pension instead. The rate is £19.30 a week effective from 23 December 1989 — the next due date of payment after the person's 66th birthday.

A pension book at this rate payable from 25 May 1990 will be available for collection at the person's local post office on 18 May 1990. A payable order in respect of arrears of pension amounting to £59.40 for the period 23 December 1989 to 24 May 1990 will issue to the person concerned within the next week.

John Ellis

Ceist:

117 Mr. Ellis asked the Minister for Social Welfare if unemployment assistance will be paid to a person (details supplied) in County Leitrim.

The person concerned claimed unemployment benefit on 7 February 1990. The claim was disallowed by the deciding officer on the grounds that she was not available for and was not genuinely seeking employment.

She appealed against the disallowance on 30 April 1990 and arrangements are being made to have the appeal decided at the earliest possible opportunity.

Frank Crowley

Ceist:

118 Mr. Crowley asked the Minister for Social Welfare when a decision will be made regarding the unemployment assistance appeal of a person (details supplied) in County Cork.

Entitlement to unemployment assistance is subject to, inter alia, the condition that a person must be available for and genuinely seeking work.

The claim of the person concerned was disallowed from 18 April 1990 on the grounds that she was not genuinely seeking work. She appealed against the disallowance on 23 April 1990 and her case was referred to an appeals officer. A decision will be given in the case at the earliest opportunity.
