Vol. 398 No. 8

Written Answers. - VHI Coverage.

Richard Bruton

Ceist:

144 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Health if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the VHI do not provide cover for persons who sustain injury as victims of crime; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware that under VHI rules, benefit is not payable in respect of injury directly or indirectly caused by crime. Compensation for medical expenses incurred by persons who sustain injury as victims of crime can be claimed from the Criminal Injuries Compensation Tribunal and I do not propose to request the VHI Board to provide cover for medical expenses which are properly recoverable from this tribunal. In any event as this is an operational matter it is one for the VHI.
