Vol. 398 No. 8

Written Answers. - Non-EC Doctors Communication Skills Requirement.

Bernard Allen

Ceist:

149 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health if he will make a statement regarding the introduction of an English test for overseas doctors as proposed by the Medical Council; and the implications of such a test for the Irish hospital services, in view of the high number of non-nationals working therein.

I understand that the Medical Council has not, in fact, proposed an English language test for non-EC doctors.

The council is, however, currently examining the practices it employs to satisfy itself that a candidate for temporary registration possesses the requisite knowledge and skills including communications skills for the efficient practice of medicine in this country.
