Vol. 398 No. 8

Written Answers. - Vehicle Imports.

Michael Noonan

Ceist:

61 Mr. M. Noonan (Limerick East) asked the Minister for Finance the actual or estimated number of (i) private cars and (ii) goods vehicles imported into the State without payment of import charges in 1989.

I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that records are not maintained in such a manner as would enable the actual number of motor vehicles to be given without the expenditure of an inordinate amount of official time. However, the estimated number of motor vehicles imported into the State without payment of import charges in 1989 was of the order of 3,500. This estimate relates to vehicles imported on a permanent basis under relief provisions relating to transfer of residence, bequests and diplomatic privilege. A breakdown of the figures between private cars and goods vehicles is not available.
