21 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food, in view of the lactation pattern of cows, whether it would be possible to change the milk quota to operate from January to January rather than its existing cycle; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
The milk quota review group which is representative of milk producers, milk processors, Teagasc and my Department, examined this question from the point of view of whether an alternative year would provide greater flexibility to producers to manage their quotas to better advantage. Having considered the various options the group recommended in favour of retaining the present April to March period and I have accepted their recommendation.
