Written Answers. - National Monument Preservation Orders.

Ceist:

87 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Finance if he will give details of any preservation orders made by him under the National Monuments Acts in the last three years, stating (a) the location (b) the nature of the damage or threat to the monument (c) when this was reported to him (d) if the monument has been saved and (e) if there are plans to restore it.

The accompanying table gives details of preservation orders made under the National Monuments Acts within the last three years. The threats of damage to the monuments arose from land reclamation, housing construction, gravel extraction and illegal excavations. Reports of threats, or perceived threats, to monuments are received on an ongoing basis.

The making of a preservation order is designed to give legal protection to a national monument. I am not aware of any infringement of these preservation orders.

The Commissioners of Public Works are statutorily precluded from carrying out restoration works at monuments which are not in their care.
