Vol. 399 No. 1

Written Answers. - Mentally Handicap Services.

Ivan Yates

Ceist:

92 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for Health the number of extra day-care and residential places made available this year for the mentally handicapped; and the way in which this relates to the current demand and waiting lists for access to such places nationally.

The Government provided an additional £2 million in the recent budget to meet the immediate priority needs of the mental handicap services. This allocation will enable 149 residential places, 21 places for respite care (serving about 200 people), 442 day places and 25 additional staff for other supports to be provided.

The regional mental handicap co-ordinating committees are currently examining the further development required in each health board area.
