99 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for Education if her Department intends to publish, or otherwise make available, to all school boards of management, a code of practice for health and safety management in school laboratories, workshops and craft-rooms; when such a code of practice will be available; and if she will make a statement on the matter.
A committee within my Department has completed preparatory work for a code of practice for school science laboratories. The matter is being reviewed again in the light of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act (1989) with a view to assessing its implications for science laboratories and other work areas in schools.
Following this review a decision will be taken on the issue of an appropriate code of practice to schools.
