Vol. 399 No. 1

Written Answers. - County Tipperary Sign Posting.

Theresa Ahearn

Ceist:

80 Mrs. T. Ahearn asked the Minister for the Environment if he will provide additional moneys to Tipperary South Riding County Council for the purpose of improving sign posting in the area in order that the area's tourist potential can be fully utilised; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I presume the Deputy is referring to signposting on non-national routes. Since 1987, grants have been allocated to a number of county councils under a programme of destination signposting of regional roads in areas of high tourist amenity. In 1990, grants totalling £75,000 have been allocated to three local authorities.

This destination signposting programme forms part of an ongoing integrated programme of both destination and amenity signposting in various areas, based on recommendations made by the County and City Managers' Association and Bord Fáilte.

The question of the provision of such a grant to Tipperary (South Riding) County Council will be borne in mind when the 1991 allocations are being determined, having regard to the overall priorities under the signposting programme. It is open to the local authority to use the discretionary grants for non-national roads paid annually by my Department, to supplement expenditure from their own resources on the provision of such signposting.
