Vol. 399 No. 3

Written Answers. - Use of Polygraph.

Charles Flanagan

Ceist:

119 Mr. Flanagan asked the Minister for Justice if he will outline his views on the use in the criminal justice system of the polygraph or lie detector as a possible way of minimising the risk of false confessions beng used in evidence; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The question of whether additional safeguards are needed to ensure that uncorroborated inculpatory admissions are properly obtained and recorded, was included in the terms of reference of the Martin Committee. The committee's recommendations are now being examined. Pending a decision by the Government on the recommendations it would be inappropriate for me to express views on the matter referred to by the Deputy.
