Vol. 399 No. 3

Written Answers. - International Driving Licences Recognition.

Michael Joe Cosgrave

Ceist:

139 Mr. Cosgrave asked the Minister for the Environment , with regard to international driving licences, especially those issued to Irish citizens in the United States, if such persons are entitled to use same in Ireland; if such persons are fully insured; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Mechanically Propelled Vehicles (International Circulation) Orders 1961-1987 made under section 38 of the Local Government Act, 1955, authorise the driving of vehicles in Ireland by persons visiting this country who hold international driving licences or domestic driving licences.

Motor insurance is a separate matter and separate arrangements for insurance cover for the purposes of driving in Ireland would require to be made.
