Vol. 399 No. 3

Written Answers. - Cahir (County Tipperary) School.

Theresa Ahearn

Ceist:

177 Mrs. T. Ahearn asked the Minister for Education the present position on the condition of St. Joseph's College, Cahir, County Tipperary from a structural and safety point of view; if her Department will provide alternative accommodation or finance to enable major reconstruction works to be carried out in the interest of providing an adequate and suitable environment for pupils and teachers; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

In the context of rationalisation of school facilities in Cahir, County Tipperary, I have sanctioned the provision of a single post-primary school in the town to replace St. Joseph's secondary school, the Convent of Mercy and the vocational school.

Pending the establishment of the new management structure, the primary responsibility for maintaining the existing schools rests with the individual school authorities.

My Department, however, is prepared to consider an application from St. Joseph's secondary school for grant-aid towards the cost of minimum repairs to the school buildings.
