Vol. 399 No. 3

Written Answers. - Helicopter Flight Safety.

Pat Lee

Ceist:

179 Dr. Lee asked the Minister for Tourism and Transport the height at which a helicopter must fly which will permit it, in the event of an emergency, to alight without hazard to persons or property in accordance with the Air Navigation Rules of the Air Order, 1973, S.I. No. 22 of 1973.

The height at which a helicopter must be flown in order to comply with the provisions of the Rules of the Air Order depends on several variables e.g. helicopter type and associated operational characteristics, windspeed, the topography etc. and would, therefore, differ from case to case. It is the responsibility of the pilot to ensure that the height at which he flies is consistent with the requirements of the order. Helicopter pilots are fully trained in this aspect of helicopter operations and must satisfy my Department in that regard for the purposes of qualifying at examinations for helicopter pilots' licences.
