Vol. 399 No. 4

Written Answers. - Drug Advisory Board.

Phil Hogan

Ceist:

97 Mr. Hogan asked the Minister for Health the names of all the members of the Drug Advisory Board; if he considers that they have adequate experience of natural medicine as members of this board; and, if not, whether he will consider addressing this matter in the future.

The members of the National Drugs Advisory Board are as follows: Professor K. O'Malley (Chairman); Dr. M. Curtin; Mr. T. McGuinn; Mr. P.F. Nowlan; Dr. J. Stronge; Professor R. F. Timoney; Dr. K. McGarry; Mr. M. C. Gaynor; Dr. A. Meade; Dr. G. Fitzgerald; Dr. T. V. O'Dwyer; Dr. P. D. O'Mahony; and Professor G.G. Shaw.

The functions of the National Drugs Advisory Board include the assessment of all medicines in relation to their safety, efficacy and quality.

When making appointments to the National Drugs Advisory Board, I have to have regard to a number of factors, including the functions of the board as prescribed. The final composition of the board must be representative of appropriate professional and technical interests and also capable of carrying out its functions to the highest standard possible.

The Deputy can be assured that I have had and will continue to have regard to the need for appropriate experience and expertise when making appointments to this board.
