Vol. 399 No. 4

Written Answers. - Extradition Ruling.

Proinsias De Rossa

Ceist:

46 Proinsias De Rossa asked the Minister for Justice if he intends to take any steps to reassure public opinion in Northern Ireland that persons suspected of serious offences there will not find a refuge in the Republic, especially in light of the great concern expressed by political figures in Northern Ireland at the outcome of the recent Supreme Court decision on extradition.

I have already addressed issues raised by the recent Supreme Court decisions, to which the question refers, in the detailed reply I gave to a number of questions on the subject on 25 April 1990 — Official Report, Vol. 397, cols. 2134-2141.

I believe that the reply I gave on that occasion will have allayed some of the concerns previously expressed about the implications which those court decisions may have for future cases. That reply, of course, also laid emphasis on the Government's continuing determination to tackle the problem of fugitive offenders, by all available legal means.
