Vol. 399 No. 4

Written Answers. - ENVIREG Programme.

Eamon Gilmore

Ceist:

90 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for the Environment if he will list the projects which he is submitting for EC funding under the ENVIREG programme; and the steps which he is taking to ensure that Ireland gets maximum benefit from funds under this programme.

The EC Commission adopted the ENVIREG initiative on 3 May 1990 and operational programmes must be submitted to the Commission within six months of that date. The Commission has already been fully briefed on Ireland's need for support for environmental measures of the kind covered by this initiative. A programme is now being prepared in consultation with the EC Commission but it would not be appropriate at this stage to list the projects which may be submitted. However, the Government indicated its intention, in the environment action programme, to seek support from the EC, including support under ENVIREG, for the new programme to eliminate untreated discharges of sewage from major coastal towns.
