Vol. 399 No. 5

Written Answers. - Urban Renewal Designated Areas.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

35 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for the Environment if he intends to identify any areas in County Kildare as being suitable for urban renewal programmes; if he has considered any such areas in the county to date; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

William Cotter

Ceist:

44 Mr. Cotter asked the Minister for the Environment if he will include the town of Monaghan in the schedule of designated towns under the urban renewal scheme; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Tomás MacGiolla

Ceist:

51 Tomás Mac Giolla asked the Minister for the Environment the reason the Ronanstown and Blanchardstown areas of County Dublin were excluded from the recent extension of the urban renewal designated areas, in view of the fact that Tallaght had been included in an earlier extension; if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the failure to include these areas has placed in jeopardy plans for the development of major town centres at Blanchardstown and Ronanstown; if he will consider including these areas; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

William Cotter

Ceist:

55 Mr. Cotter asked the Minister for the Environment if he will include the towns of Carrickmacross, Castleblayney, Clones and Ballybay in the schedule of designated towns under the urban renewal scheme, as these towns have suffered heavily due to their geographic location; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

James Leonard

Ceist:

78 Mr. Leonard asked the Minister for the Environment if he has any proposals for the extension of the designated areas; and if he will give special consideration to Border towns whose economy has suffered through trading difficulties over the past number of years.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 35, 44, 51, 55 and 78 together.

On 1 May 1990, I announced details of my proposals to extend the designated areas scheme for urban renewal. The new areas to be included in the scheme are additional inner city areas in Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Galway and Waterford and parts of Ballina, Bray, Carlow, Clonmel, Drogheda, Ennis, Longford and Portlaoise.

I am aware of the case made for designation of many other centres and I have no doubt that these centres including those mentioned by the Deputies could benefit from designation under the scheme. However, in order to maximise the impact of the scheme, designation must be restricted.

I have no proposals to designate any further areas.
