Vol. 399 No. 7

Written Answers. - Allocation of Garda Recruits.

Máirín Quill

Ceist:

100 Miss Quill asked the Minister for Justice if he will allocate additional gardaí to Cork city on foot of the availability of new gardaí graduating from the training centre at Templemore this month.

Decisions as to the number of gardaí to be allocated to any particular area are based on an assessment by the Garda authorities of the relative policing needs of all areas throughout the State. Garda personnel deployment strategies are constantly reviewed to ensure that resources are assigned to where they are most needed at any given time.

The first group of new Garda trainees who became attested to the force on 2 June are being allocated to stations in the Dublin Metropolitan Area because this is where, in the professional police judgment of the Garda authorities, the greatest need for their services exists.

I am satisfied that full consideration is being and will continue to be given to the policing needs of Cork city. In particular, the needs of the Cork area will be considered, along with the needs of all other areas, as further trainees complete their initial training and become full members of the force.
