The method of funding public library projects was changed from a system of subsidisable loans to capital grants with effect from 1 January 1988. The number of applications submitted to the Department since that date by county councils for approval to the building of new libraries is set out in the following tabular statement:

The system of capital grants for public library projects commenced with effect from 1 January 1988. Details of capital grants paid to library authorities since that date are set out in the following tabular statement:
