Vol. 399 No. 11

Written Answers. - Prisoner Complaints.

Richard Bruton

Ceist:

60 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Justice the procedure which exists in Irish prisons for dealing with complaints by prisoners; and if he has considered the possibility of external adjudication in the case of unresolved difficulties.

Prisoners may make complaints to the Governor, the Minister for Justice, the visiting committee, the courts and, where the complaint involves an allegation of a criminal offence having been committed, to the Garda Síochána. I am satisfied that the various avenues through which complaints by prisoners may be pursued provide adequate means whereby there can be external involvement in the processing of such complaints.
