Vol. 399 No. 12

Written Answers. - Conversion Grants.

Mervyn Taylor

Ceist:

71 Mr. Taylor asked the Minister for the Environment , in view of his decision to ban the use of bituminous coal in the greater Dublin area, if he will outline the grants to be made available to enable people to have their fuel burning equipment adjusted, altered or adapted as necessary to use smokeless fuels; if the Tallaght area of Dublin 24 will be included as an appropriately affected area; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I would draw the Deputy's attention to my reply to Questions Nos. 252 and 253 of 24 October 1989, in which I outlined the provision of the Air Pollution Act, 1987, in relation to the payment of financial assistance to householders.

As announced in the Government's Environment Action Programme grant commitments in respect of the special control areas in Ballyfermot are being met in full. However, in view of the ban on the marketing, sale and distribution of bituminous coal within the restricted area of Dublin with effect from 1 September next, no further special control area orders will be confirmed and accordingly further schemes of conversion grants are not being introduced.
