Vol. 399 No. 12

Written Answers. - Extradition Numbers.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

70 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Justice if he will outline the number of persons extradited from Ireland to the United Kingdom in the past ten years; the number, if any, against whom charges were then preferred by the United Kingdom authorities; the number convicted; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am advised by the Garda authorities that the number of persons extradited to Great Britain and Northern Ireland in the past ten years is 209.

With regard to the second and third parts of the question, the position is that, prior to 1988, Garda extradition statistics were not compiled in such a way as to provide the information sought by the Deputy. The Garda authorities have informed me that though the information requested in relation to the period since 1 January 1988 is not readily available it may be possible to compile it. I have requested that this be done, if it can be done without the expenditure of a disproportionate amount of Garda time, and I propose to communicate further with the Deputy on this matter.
