Vol. 400 No. 2

Written Answers. - Thurles Job Creation.

Michael Lowry

Ceist:

91 Mr. Lowry asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if his attention has been drawn to the commitments given by the Shannon Development Authorities and Comhlucht Siúicre Éireann Teoranta and confirmed by the then Fianna Fáil Administration to provide alternative jobs in Thurles, County Tipperary, resulting from the closure of Thurles sugar factory; if he will outline the job opportunities specified in each of the proposed alternative industries; the progress made in achieving the job targets; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The progress of individual industrial projects in particularly areas of the country is, essentially, a day-to-day matter for the industrial development agency operating in that area. In the case of North Tipperary the agency concerned is Shannon Development.

I am informed that good progress is being made by Shannon Development in assisting projects to establish and expand in Thurles with a view to recovering the employment lost by the closure of the Comhlucht Siúicre Éireann factory there.
