Vol. 400 No. 2

Written Answers. - EUROPEN Campaign.

Ruairí Quinn

Ceist:

121 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for Tourism and Transport, in respect of the Government-sponsored EUROPEN campaign, the action he has taken within his Department to ensure Ireland's preparedness for 1992; if, as recommended, he has appointed a person in his Department with specific responsibility for 1992; if that person has developed and promoted a programme of work/activities in this area; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Because of their size and scale, their pervasive nature and importance in the national economy, the transport and tourism sectors are two key sectors for the attainment of the Single Market objectives.

All opportunities that present themselves are being availed of to stress the opportunities which will be presented by the Single Market and to urge the transport and tourism sectors to take account of the new opportunities in their strategy and planning. An information and awareness conference attended by over 150 representatives of the tourism and tranport sectors was held towards the end of 1988. The success of the Single Market programme will depend on the extent to which the opportunities are grasped and I have stressed this to the State-sponsored bodies under the aegis of my Department and also to other transport and tourism interests. A senior officer of my Department has been appointed with specific responsibility for 1992. This officer has been actively engaged in promoting a programme of activities in the transport and tourism areas and has addressed various conferences, seminars and colloquia on the subject, and has contributed articles to periodicals etc.

The studies on the implications of 1992 for the tourism and the transport sectors commissioned by the European Bureau of the Department of the Taoiseach will shortly be generally available.
