Vol. 400 No. 2

Written Answers. - Salmon Regulations.

Jim Higgins

Ceist:

29 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Minister for the Marine if he will introduce regulations governing the marketing and sale of salmon whereby the salmon will be described as either the wild or farmed variety; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

My Department's functions in this matter are concerned with the licensing of salmon dealers and the implementation of hygiene and quality regulations and, in particular, the provision of certificates of quality for the purpose of export marketing. The origin of the salmon and, in particular, whether it is farmed or wild, is of no particular significance in this regard. As regards labelling and description for the final consumer, this does not fall within my Department's ambit.
