Vol. 400 No. 3

Written Answers. - Land Reclamation Aid.

P. J. Sheehan

Ceist:

51 Mr. Sheehan asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the reason the programme for western development operating in disadvantaged areas has been abandoned through the termination of dry land grants under the scheme from 2 May, 1990; and the reason farmers will not be visited by officials of his Department after that date.

As the western package, under which aid is provided for land reclamation, is due to expire early next year, arrangements are now being made to phase it out. In this connection it had been decided to suspend the processing of further applications so that the extent of existing commitments can be established. If it emerges that these commitments do not exhaust the EC funds available for this purpose the processing of applications can be resumed.
