Vol. 400 No. 3

Written Answers. - Agricultural Supply and Price Disciplines.

Austin Deasy

Ceist:

68 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if he will give an assurance that the European Commission will enter into negotiations with the United States and New Zealand to ensure that these countries stabilise their milk output, while there is a threat of further quota cuts in the Community as stocks of butter and skim milk powder continue to grow at an alarming rate.

Discussions on the future arrangements for agricultural supports and supply and price disciplines are currently taking place in the context of the Uruguay round of GATT negotiations in which the United States and New Zealand are also participating. I have already stated that any reforms in relation to agricultural supports agreed in the outcome of these negotiations must be accompanied by supply and price disciplines to ensure stability on world markets.

There are no proposals for further quota reductions at Community level. I hope that the various increases in support levels which have recently been agreed will restore balance on the Community dairy market.
