Vol. 400 No. 3

Written Answers. - Kilavullen (Cork) School Staffing.

Paul Bradford

Ceist:

127 Mr. Bradford asked the Minister for Education if she will respond favourably to a recent request for the appointment of a concessionary teacher at Kilavullen national school, County Cork.

The staffing of national schools is determined by the enrolment in the schools on 30 September of the previous year. This is in accordance with the agreement on staffing made between the Government and the INTO under the Programme for National Recovery. In the case of Kilavullen national school there were 131 pupils enrolled on 30 September 1989 which warrants a staff of principal plus 3 assistants for the 1990/91 school year.

The school authorities recently applied to my Department for a concessionary teaching post under the special scheme of teaching assistance for schools serving disadvantaged areas. I regret that further resources are not available at present to allow for the inclusion of any more schools in the scheme. If resources become available in the future, the circumstances of the school will be considered.
