Vol. 400 No. 6

Written Answers. - County Kildare Church Tower Preservation.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

34 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Finance if the Office of Public Works is interested in acquiring and preserving the tower of St. Mary's Church of Ireland, Maynooth, County Kildare; if it is possible, through the Office of Public Works and the National Heritage Council, to organise a scheme for the preservation-restoration of the tower, and if he will make a statement on the matter.

This tower is in an integral part of St. Mary's Church, Maynooth, which is in the ownership of the Church of Ireland. Any such building which is habitually used for ecclesiastical purposes is outside the scope of the National Monuments Acts.

Should the Church authorities wish to carry out any conservation works themselves, they could apply to the National Heritage Council for financial assistance. The commissioners would be pleased to give them any possible technical advice and guidance.
