Vol. 400 No. 6

Written Answers. - County Kildare Railway Bridge Works.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

43 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for the Environment the current position regarding road and bridge re-alignments at the railway bridge, Sallins, County Kildare; when the work will be carried out and the cost involved; if the project is assisted by finance from the European Structural Fund; if provision has been made to have the work undertaken in the current year; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

This scheme is located on a regional road. I understand that the local authority and Iarnród Éireann are now finalising draft contract documents for the scheme and that the documents are expected to be ready for submission to my Department next month. Pending the Department's decision on these documents, I am not in a position to indicate when work on the construction of the scheme is likely to commence.

The estimated cost of the overall scheme, including the improvement of the immediate approach roads, is of the order of £500,000. The Department allocated a special State road grant of £180,000 as a contribution to costs arising on the scheme in 1990. Subject to the Department's decision on the draft contract documents, the scheme will be put forward for EC grant assistance from the European Regional Development Fund.
