Vol. 400 No. 6

Written Answers. - County Kildare By-Pass.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

44 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for the Environment the current position regarding the N4 by-pass of Leixlip, Maynooth, and Kilcock, County Kildare; when he expects the project to go ahead; the total estimated cost at present if all preliminary procedures in relation to the matter have been finalised; if it is expected that any site works will commence in the current year; if he will indicate total expenditure for the current year on the project and the works involving this expenditure; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The current position is that the local authority have submitted draft contract documents for the road works element of this scheme. I understand that the local authority expect to be in a position to forward the final set of documents for the entire scheme for decision next September.

The estimated cost of the scheme is £50 million (1989 prices). State road grant provisions to date amount to £6.54 million, including a road grant allocation of £4 million for 1990 to meet pre-construction costs, including design and property acquisition.

The phasing of major road improvement schemes in the period 1990 to 1993 has been considered in the context of the Operational Programme for Roads and Other Transport Infrastructure, which has been submitted to the EC Commission. Pending the Commission's decision on the programme, it is not proposed to indicate the major schemes on which work will be undertaken in the period to 1993.
