69 Miss Quill asked the Minister for Justice the number of persons detained under the Offences Against the State Acts; the number of persons charged following arrest under the Offences Against the State Acts; and the section of the Act under which people were arrested and charged in 1988 together with the numbers convicted following detention.
I am informed by the Garda authorities that the number of persons arrested in 1988 under section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act, 1939 was 1,938. I am also informed that the other information sought by the Deputy is not readily available from Garda records and would have to be compiled specially, at the cost of a disproportionate amount of scarce Garda resources.
