Vol. 401 No. 1

Written Answers. - Extradition Applications.

Máirín Quill

Ceist:

76 Miss Quill asked the Minister for Justice the number of applications for extradition which have been made by the British Government in relation to (a) people facing charges in Northern Ireland and (b) people facing charges in Great Britain in each year since 1978.

The attached tabular statement shows the number of persons for whom extradition warrants were received from Northern Ireland and Britain in the period since 1978. Warrants for the return of persons to Northern Ireland and Britain originate, of course, from the relevant police force — not the British Government.

I have been advised by the Garda authorities that it can happen that warrants are received in respect of an individual in more than one year or that warrants received in one year are withdrawn and renewed in later years. The figures include one entry in respect of such individuals relating to the date of the original warrant. I am advised too, that the figures provided do not distinguish between persons sought for the purpose of standing trial and those sought to serve a sentence on foot of a pre-existing conviction.
