Vol. 401 No. 1

Written Answers. - County Sligo Road Projects.

Edward Nealon

Ceist:

85 Mr. Nealon asked the Minister for the Environment the funds which have been designated in the national roads programme for the construction of the Sligo inner-relief road from the new bridge westward to the city boundary; when it is proposed to commence work on the project; the work, if any, which has been carried out on any compulsory acquisition that will be involved; the work, if any, which has been carried out on acquisition, other than compulsory, along the proposed line; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I presume that the Deputy is referring to the operational programme for roads and other transport infrastructure which has been submitted to the EC Commission. Pending the Commission's decision on the programme, it is not proposed to indicate the phasing and funding of major road improvement schemes in the period to 1993.

Properties necessary for the northern end of the scheme in question were included in a confirmed compulsory purchase order for the new Sligo Bridge. I understand that the local authority have acquired some of these properties.

A CPO in respect of properties for the balance of the scheme has not been submitted to me for determination. I understand that the local authority have acquired a number of such properties by agreement.

A compulsory purchase order in respect of properties for the scheme in question has not been submitted to me for determination. I understand that the local authority have acquired one propery, in the vicinity of Ballisodare, by agreement.

Ceist:

87 Mr. Nealon asked the Minister for the Environment the funds which have been designated in the national roads programme for the construction of the Curlews by-pass on the Dublin-Sligo road; when it is proposed to commence work on the project; the work, if any, which has been carried out on any compulsory acquisition that will be involved; the work, if any, which has been carried out on acquisition, other than compulsory, along the proposed line; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Roscommon County Council are at present carrying out an in-depth study of alternative routes for the proposed Curlews by-pass scheme and are in the process of engaging independent consultants to prepare an environmental impact statement on these alternatives. When the statement is complete, it will be presented to Roscommon and Sligo County Councils for consideration before a final decision is made regarding the alignment. Pending this decision, the question of land acquisition, compulsory or by agreement, is premature.

Pending the EC Commission's decision on the operational programme for roads and other transport infrastructure it is not proposed to indicate the phasing and funding of major road improvement schemes in the period tO 1993.
