Vol. 401 No. 4

Written Answers. - Limerick School Alterations.

Michael Noonan

Ceist:

246 Mr. Noonan (Limerick East) asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the fact that structural alterations required by the local fire chief at a school (details supplied) in Limerick will cost £46,000 and that her Department is requesting a contribution from the school of £16,000; if she will re-examine the matter with a view to her Department undertaking the full cost of the necessary fire prevention alternations; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware of the situation in relation to the national school in Limerick referred to by the Deputy. Under the rules for national schools there must be a local contribution towards the cost of works eligible for capital grant. My Department has sanctioned the normal grant towards the cost of the proposed works and the question of an improved grant is being considered in the context of the overall circumstances of the case. A decision will be conveyed to the school authorities at an early date.
