Vol. 401 No. 5

Written Answers. - Passport Name.

Brian O'Shea

Ceist:

55 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if the second wife of a man whose previous marriage had been annulled by the Roman Catholic Church and who was married to him in a Roman Catholic marriage, can have her married name on her passport; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

As I indicated in a reply on 22 May, 1990, the general rule about names on passports is that passports are normally issued in the name on the applicant's birth certificate. Where the applicant wishes to use a name other than that on her-his birth certificate, and this differs significantly from the latter, evidence will be required showing that the name in question has been used by the applicant over a reasonable period of time.

This rule obtains irrespective of the basis for the name which the applicant wishes to have on her-his passport.
