Vol. 402 No. 4

Written Answers. - World Climate Conference.

Eamon Gilmore

Ceist:

53 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for the Environment if he will outline the agreements made at the recent Council of EC Energy and Environment Ministers concerning the Second World Climate Conference; if he will be attending the conference; and the target for greenhouse gas emissions which has been set by the Irish Government.

The Joint Council of Environment and Energy Ministers on 29 October, 1990 agreed to the following:

—a common approach on the question of global warming:

—response strategies for the community; and

—an agreed Community position for the Second World Climate Conference.

It is intended that Ireland will be represented at Ministerial level at the Second World Climate Conference.

In line with the Bergen Ministerial Declaration of May 1990, a national strategy is being developed for greenhouse gas emissions; the Community arrangements indicated above will also be relevant in this context.
