Vol. 402 No. 5

Written Answers. - Health Research Board Funding.

Bernard Allen

Ceist:

165 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health if he will make a statement on reports that the Health Research Board was unable to invite new research grant applications last year as a result of severe funding difficulties; and whether the Health Research Board will be given increased allocations for next year.

In 1989 the Health Research Board submitted their corporate plan, setting out their research strategy for 1989 to 1991 and in tandem undertook a comprehensive review of their funding arrangements. As a result, while no new research grant applications were sought in 1989 a number of new projects were approved for funding. This year new grant applications were sought under the corporate plan and further projects approved for funding.

With regard to the board's 1991 allocation, no decisions have been made yet concerning the level of funding for the health services next year.
