Vol. 402 No. 7

Written Answers. - Semi-State Body Appointment.

Seán Ryan

Ceist:

46 Mr. Ryan asked the Minister for Tourism and Transport if his attention has been drawn to the pending appointment of a non-national as managing director of a major semi-State body (details supplied) under the aegis of his Department; and if he has satisfied himself that there is no candidate of sufficient calibre available in the Irish public or private sectors capable of running this body.

Ceist:

47 Mr. Ryan asked the Minister for Tourism and Transport if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the appointment of a non-national as managing director of a semi-State body (details supplied) will have a devastating effect on morale at all levels in that body and its parent group of companies; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Ceist:

48 Mr. Ryan asked the Minister for Tourism and Transport if he will make a statement on reports that it is the Government's intention to privatise Dublin Bus after agreement has been reached with the Social Partners on the next Programme for National Recovery; and that it is this strategy which is behind the proposed appointment of the new managing director of Dublin Bus.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 46, 47 and 48 together.

Under Section 11 (2) (b) of the Transport (Re-organisation of Córas Iompair Eireann) Act, 1986 the directors of Dublin Bus are appointed by the Chairman of CIE, with my consent. Following the resignation of the managing director of Dublin Bus, the vacancy was advertised extensively by CIE both externally and within the CIE group of companies. There was a large number of applicants for the position, including internal applicants, other Irish applicants and applicants from the UK. Following a comprehensive selection process, the successful candidate was unanimously selected by a sub-committee of the board of CIE, including the chairman, and unanimously endorsed by the board of CIE. I have given my consent to the appointment.
There are no proposals under consideration for the privatisation of Dublin Bus.
