Vol. 402 No. 8

Written Answers - Kill (County Kildare) Post-Primary Needs.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

128 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education if she is considering the provision of a second level school in Kill, County Kildare; if she has changed her policy in regard to the provision of such schools in Kill; if she will indicate where second level students from that area are likely to be placed in the future, in view of overcrowding in adjoining schools; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The Deputy will be aware that Kill is in the Naas post-primary catchment area.

In 1985 my Department undertook a thorough appraisal of the future post-primary needs of the Kill area. This appraisal showed clearly that the number of pupils seeking post-primary education in the immediate Kill area could not sustain a post-primary school of a reasonable size. The most recent statistical data available supports this conclusion. My Department, therefore, are of the view that pupils from the Kill area can best be catered for by the three existing post-primary schools in Naas.

I have this year sanctioned the provision of additional accommodation at the Mercy secondary school, Naas, which, it is anticipated will be shortly completed. A building project for the CBS is also at architectural planning stage.
