Vol. 402 No. 8

Written Answers - Dublin-Maynooth Rail Services.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

129 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Tourism and Transport if a request has been received from Iarnród Éireann for the provision of extra or improved rolling stock on the Dublin/Maynooth commuter line; if the necessary capital will be made available to implement this proposal; if his attention has been drawn to the unsatisfactory service which exists at present on this line; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I recently gave approval for investment by CIE of £18 million in 17 new railcars for use on suburban lines in the Dublin and Cork areas, including the Dublin/Maynooth line. This investment will enable Iarnród Éireann to improve the quality of their suburban commuter rail services in these areas.

The expenditure will be funded entirely by CIE from a combination of their own resources and borrowings.
