Vol. 402 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Kildare Generating Station.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

18 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Energy, in relation to his statement on 9 August 1990 (details supplied), if he will indicate the anticipated lifespan of the ESB generating station at Allenwood, County Kildare, having regard to availability of peat supplies; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I announced on 9 August 1990 that the ESB will operate its power station at Allenwood and Bord na Móna will supply turf to the station as long as supplies from the local Bord na Móna bogs permit.

In view of the age of the station and the possibility of a major breakdown, it is not possible to put a definitive timescale on how much longer Allenwood will remain open. However, while operational plans by Bord na Móna and the ESB are being made on a year to year basis, every effort will be made to keep the station going while local turf supply permits.

I can assure the Minister that we in County Kildare appreciate his efforts. May I ask him if he foresees any factors which could bring about the premature closure of the station? I am not asking him to close the station but to confirm that there are no discernible factors, for example, matters related to the financial position of Bord na Móna, which could bring about the premature closure of the station.

One matter which must be taken into consideration at all times is the question of the safety of staff and public. That is my primary consideration, bearing in mind the power station is almost 40 years old. That is the only matter that I can see which may give rise to some problems. I do not believe anyone would wish to see the power plant being kept open if it posed a danger to those working in it but that matter is kept under close examination.

Will it remain open for another ten years?

I cannot estimate how long more it will remain open. Those who work in the power station would have a far better idea of its possible lifespan than I would.

That disposes of questions for today.
