Vol. 403 No. 1

Written Answers. - Export Credit Insurance Scheme.

Michael Bell

Ceist:

137 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if his attention has been drawn to any company covered by the export credit insurance scheme for exports to Iraq since 1983 who received any moneys, payments or benefits of any kind which they should not have received; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The terms of the Deputy's question are unclear to me. Subject to this I would say that my attention has not been drawn to any case where a company of the kind mentioned by the Deputy have received any moneys, payments or benefits from Iraq since 1983 of a kind which they should not have received.

However, on foot of certain policies of export credit insurance in respect of beef exports to Iraq in 1987 and 1988, which I have since voided and which are now the subject of legal proceedings instituted against me, certain benefits in the way of export finance accrued to the companies concerned which, without insurance cover, they would not have been entitled to.
