Vol. 403 No. 1

Written Answers. - Carriage of Goods Legislation.

Gay Mitchell

Ceist:

65 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Justice if special efforts are being made to ensure that the law in relation to the carriage of goods, such as overloading, licensing, is being applied by the Garda and other related authorities; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am assured by the Garda authorities that every effort is being made by the force to enforce the legislation governing the carriage of goods to the maximum extent consistent with the need to meet the many other competing demands on Garda services.

I am informed that for the three years 1987, 1988 and 1989, proceedings were instituted by the Garda in respect of 9,600 alleged breaches of the Road Transport Acts and 4,662 alleged offences of overloading under the Road Traffic Acts.

Functions relating to the enforcement of the legislation in question are also exercised by transport officers appointed under the Road Transport Act, 1986, who come within the sphere of responsibility of my colleague, the Minister for Tourism and Transport.
