Vol. 403 No. 1

Written Answers. - Firearms Tax Yields.

Enda Kenny

Ceist:

94 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Finance the amount paid in VAT on shotgun cartridges in each of the past three years.

The information on VAT returns submitted by traders is not sufficiently detailed to allow the calculation of the VAT yield from specific items. There are no other official sources of data from which a reliable estimate of VAT collected on the sale of shotgun cartridges could be derived.

Enda Kenny

Ceist:

95 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Finance the amount paid in gun licences, in each category, in Ireland in each of the past three years.

I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that net receipts of excise duties from firearms certificates and firearms dealers certificates for each of the last three years are as follows:

Firearms Certificates

Firearms Dealers Certificates

1987

£1,412,404

£8,404

1988

£2,637,095

£7,406

1989

£2,355,942

£18,778

A further breakdown of the categories for which firearm certificates are issued is not recorded in the office of the Revenue Commissioners. These receipts are paid over to the office of the Revenue Commissioners by the Department of Justice who are responsible for their collection.
