Vol. 403 No. 1

Written Answers. - Westmeath Historic Site.

Roger T. Garland

Ceist:

100 Mr. Garland asked the Minister for Finance if his attention has been drawn to the situation which has arisen at Cross Hill, Bealin, Athlone, County Westmeath in regard to a High Cross dating from the 7th century, where building has commenced and a further application for planning permission has been lodged which will possibly damage this important site; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The site, for which West-meath County Council have already granted planning permission, is well removed from the area in which the Bealin High Cross is situated. Two other planning applications are currently being processed. In the case of one of these developments, the Commissioners of Public Works will be recommending to Westmeath County Council that certain conditions in relation to the protection of the archaeology of the High Cross site should be included in any planning permission that may be granted.
